MOUNT KILIMANJARO

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak and the world’s tallest free-standing volcano, is a breathtaking marvel. It features two dormant volcanoes—Kibo (5,895m above sea level) and Mawenzi (5,149m)—along with one extinct volcano, Shira (3,962m).

The origin of its name is uncertain, but it is believed to derive from a combination of the Swahili word Kilima (meaning "mountain") and the KiChagga word Njaro, loosely translating to "whiteness," hence the name "White Mountain."

Covering an area of 1,712 km², Kilimanjaro was declared a National Park in 1973, officially opened for tourism in 1977, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and recognized as a Natural Wonder of Africa in 2013.

Climbing to its snow-capped summit, towering high above the clouds, is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that leaves an indelible mark on every traveler’s soul.
